Orlando Guild — Making a Tree

You will need around 100 strands of wire cut to 12 inches. I usually use 22 to 24 gauge wire. You don’t need to cut the wires individually. I usually use a piece of wood about the length I need the wire. Then wrap the wire around the board 50 times, that will give you 100 strands. Sometimes I use more wire depending on the type of tree I am making. Here is a photo of the wire wrapping in progress.

Next clip the wire at one end and remove the wire from the board. Measure about 2 inches from the end to start twisting the wire.

The wires have been clipped.

Place the pliers at about 2 inches from the end.

Continue twisting the wire for about 2 to 3 inches, that will be the trunk of the tree. The next step will be forming the root of the tree. Split the bottom wire into 5 segments. Twist the wire in each segment two or 3 times then split that segment again. Keep twisting and splitting till all the roots are twisted

I twist the trunk to around 2 to 3 inches.

I split the wires for the roots into odd number of segments, usually 5 segments.

The wires have been twisted and trimmed all the way to the end. This is the bottom view of the tree.

This is the finished root before I add the clay and the base.

Now I move to the branches of the tree. At about the 2 to 3 inch twist of the trunk, I split the top of the tree into 2 or 3 segments. Twist each segment for about an inch then I split that segment into 2 to 3 branches and so on until all the branches have been twisted.

Here I am splitting the top part of the tree into 2 parts.

I twist the split for about an inch or so and then split the branch again into two or 3 parts. I vary the branches since trees are not symmetrical.

Here is the finished twisting portion of the tree. Now I move on to the polymer clay steps.

Here is the completely twisted tree before I cover it polymer clay add the base and other polymer clay details.
